BESTARI JAYA: AS part of its ongoing corporate social responsibility efforts, Hartalega Holdings Bhd, the world's largest manufacturer of nitrile gloves, recently launched its inaugural School Adoption Programme taking SMK Raja Muda Musa under its wing.
Officiated by the Selangor Department of Education, Human Capital Development head, Khalid Jaafar, the launch of the adoption programme was attended by representatives from Hartalega as well as members of the school board, community leaders, 90 teachers and 700 students from SMK Raja Muda Musa.
According to Hartalega Sdn Bhd director, Kuan Vin Seung, the company aims to improve the education and quality of life for the students.
"The programme will not only support the students academically, but will also contain elements of art, culture, entrepreneurship and science to encourage the students to grow into more well-rounded individuals," he said.
As part of this initiative, Hartalega will collaborate with the school to introduce a variety of educational programmes and extra-curricular activities, upgrade the school's facilities to create a more conducive learning environment and provide financial support for needy students.
Along with educational field trips, Hartalega will also be organising visits to its manufacturing plants in order to raise awareness among students on the importance of sustainable technology and environmental practices.
Hartalega's school adoption programme is tailored to meet the needs and leverage on the unique strengths of SMK Raja Muda Musa.
The school boasts the only weightlifting centre in the Kuala Selangor district.
The centre has produced many talented weightlifters including gold and bronze medallists at the national level and Hartalega plans to build on this tradition of success by assisting in the development of these athletes.
The glove manufacturer intends to achieve this by upgrading the school's weightlifting room and equipment, sponsoring promising athletes at a national level as well as have coaches from national weightlifting bodies run seminars and clinics.
There are also plans in the pipeline to promote the centre to other schools in the community by sponsoring prizes for district level weightlifting competitions.
"We are confident that this programme will be a success and we look forward to expanding it further, alternating among schools on a yearly basis.
"However, based on the commitment and interest shown by the schools we adopt, we may consider extending the adoption period on a case by case basis, depending, of course, on approval from the school and Hartalega's management.
We will continue to seek out opportunities to reach out to the Bestari Jaya community and make a positive impact with more programmes such as this," said Kuan.
Hartalega has a long history of corporate social responsibility initiatives.
