A 200-Year Blue-Ribbon Legacy of Publishing

  • 1786

    His Majesty’s Stationery Office (HMSO) is established as part of HM Treasury.

  • 1882

    HMSO becomes the official publisher for both houses of Parliament.

  • 1889

    HMSO is appointed as the Queen’s Printer of Acts of Parliament and becomes the publisher of the London Gazette in the same year.

  • 1996

    The publishing arm of HMSO (now OPSI) is privatised and The Stationery Office (TSO) is born

  • 1999

    TSO joins the dot.com era and launches its first website, UKState, designed to aggregate and sell official and other content for use on other websites’ feeds.

  • 2000

    www.tsoshop.co.uk is launched.

  • 2006

    TSO becomes part of the Williams Lea family, enabling it to draw on an additional pool of talent and economies of scale in purchasing to benefit its clients.

  • 2009

    TSO achieves Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of custody certification, which we have retained for the past 13 years

  • 2010

    TSO developed legislation.gov.uk with The National Archives, providing full access to newly enacted legislation for the UK, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as legislation going back to 1267 as open data. Legislation.gov.uk is one of the first websites of this kind in the world.

  • 2013

    TSO launches www.thegazette.co.uk, digitising all the Gazettes published since 1662

  • 2018

    The millionth download of the DVSA official Theory Test App, published by TSO, on the Apple store.

  • 2019

    130 years on from the HMSO becoming the publisher of the London Gazette, TSO continues to publish the London Gazette as a fully digitised solution.

  • 2022

    The Official Highway Code is the No.1 bestselling book on Amazon.co.uk.

Where We Are Today and Heading Towards Tomorrow

In more recent years, TSO has expanded beyond the public sector and has published for private sector organisations, with a real focus on providing technology and digital solutions.

TSO continues to work with the UK government and is the official publisher for legislation, the London, Edinburgh and Belfast Gazettes (the UK government’s three official journals of record), Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority, Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, Financial Conduct Authority, Home Office, Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Health and Safety Executive.
