IN AN effort to ensure that the communities it operates in have an opportunity for a brighter future, Hartalega Holdings Berhad, the world's largest producer of nitrile gloves, recently hosted a fun-filled day of activities for the Bestari Jaya community via its 'Kami Prihatin' programme, with over 1,000 people in attendance.
Hartalega executive director and deputy managing director Kuan Mun Leong said: "This event is part of our ongoing corporate responsibility efforts, through which we have given back to the community via various initiatives over the past 15 years."
"We have always incorporated the value of caring in our company's vision and we are pleased to be able to make positive contributions to the community within the vicinity of our factory. We are grateful for the chance to interact with and give back to the people of Bestari Jaya."
Held at Dewan Orang Ramai Bestari Jaya, an outdoor carnival was organised with a variety of activities, booths and demonstrations.
During the carnival Hartalega also held a prize-giving ceremony, presenting gifts and contributions to deserving members of the community.
With District Officer Mohd Misri Idris on hand to officiate, Hartalega rewarded 114 students with an Award for Excellence for their academic achievements.
Monetary donations and hampers were also distributed in support of 220 underprivileged families and students and tokens of appreciation were given to 43 community leaders for their contributions to the community.
In addition, Hartalega sponsored funds to Polis DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM) for the 'MyDistress' programme.
While the prize-giving ceremony took place, more than 600 members of the community gathered outdoor for the carnival, which featured musical and traditional dance performances by students from the University of Selangor (Unisel).
The children were entertained by a variety of exciting activities, including a colouring contest and special appearances by Mickey and Minnie Mouse mascots as well as clowns.
To highlight the importance of safety in the community, there were safety demonstrations held throughout the day by PDRM and CPP Training and Services, including emergency response and self-defence techniques as well as fire-fighting tips by the Fire and Rescue Department.
Under strict supervision, children had the opportunity to learn how to put out fires using a fire extinguisher.
In addition, a team from Kuala Selangor Health Department gave out free health screenings and held a blood donation drive.
There were also a number of booths set up by the Kuala Selangor District Council, Land Office, Malaysia Youth Council, Department of National Unity, District Education Office and Unisel to provide the community with useful information.
"By reaching out to a cross-section of people from young children to teenagers to adults and old folks, we hope to work together with Bestari Jaya to cultivate a healthier and safer community for all.
"We look forward to more corporate social responsibility initiatives such as this in the future." concluded Kuan.
